5 Finalists from TU Graz @ Austrian Cyber Security Challenge 2020

After four intense months of qualification, the best participants competed in the finals of the annual Austrian Cyber Security Challenge on 21st October. The competition took place among school pupils, students, and general “hackers” in Austria.
The 16 challenges comprised several categories: Reverse Engineering, Exploitation, Machine Learning, Web Security, Programming, Cryptography, Forensics,  Networking, and Mathematics & Probabilities.
Five students of the TU Graz were among the best-ranked participants!

Our Redesigned Major in Information Security

We are proud to present our completely redesigned Major in Information Security that is offered as part of the renewed Master’s Programs in Computer Science (CS), Information and Computer Engineering (ICE) and Software Engineering and Management (SEM). Students can choose from four exciting modules, which cover System Security, Cryptology & Privacy, Formal Methods for Security, and Secure Applications. IAIK student Martin Schwarzl has received an award for this year’s best master thesis by the “Forum Technik und Gesellschaft” of the TU Graz. His work focuses on the IT-security leak NetSpectre. Find out more about it here.

Michael Schwarz Wins the EuroSys Roger Needham PhD Award

Michael Schwarz has been selected as the Winner of this year’s EuroSys Roger Needham PhD award. It is awarded annually to a PhD student “from a European university whose thesis is regarded to be an exceptional, innovative contribution to knowledge in the computer systems area”.

Serious security hole in INTEL processors uncovered – Load Value Injection

Security researchers at IAIK, Moritz Lipp, Daniel Gruss and Michael Schwarz, together with an international team have once again uncovered a serious security hole in computer processors. With the new security hole published under the name “Load Value Injection”, there is another method to read out sensitive data. You an find the whole article HERE.

Barbara Gigerl Receives Award for Outstanding Master’s Thesis

The Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) annually honours the best 50 (out of 16.000!) Austrian Master’s theses with a “Würdigungspreis/Staatspreis”. This year, IAIK doctoral student Barbara Gigerl received the award for her thesis “Automated Analysis of Speculation Windows in Spectre Attacks”. The main focus of the thesis is the analysis and extension of speculation windows in Spectre attacks, executed by CPUs of four different vendors.

Peter Pessl receives BMBWF Award of Excellence 2019

The Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) annually honours outstanding Austrian dissertations with the Award of Excellence. This year, IAIK Postdoc Peter Pessl, who finished his doctoral studies “sub auspiciis”, received this prestigous award for his thesis ‘Side-Channel Attacks on Lattice-Based Cryptography and Multi-Processor Systems’. In his work, he expands side-channel attacks, which exploit that physical properties of an electronic device depend on processed secrets, to new fields. Concretely, he proposed new attacks on lattice-based cryptography – a new type of cryptographic algorithms secure against attacks by future quantum computers. Congratulations!
